Volkswagen Beetle Turbo 2012

Volkswagen Beetle Turbo 2012

With the introduction of its new 2012 Beetle, Volkswagen is hoping to drop the cutesy hatch’s “chick car” descriptor and lure more male buyers.

In fact, Volkswagen has set itself a target to increase the percentage of male Beetle buyers from a low 36 percent for the previous generation New Beetle to 59 percent for the new 2012 model.

Accordingly, this third generation of the People’s Car has been given a serious dose of testosterone and has actually spawned a high-performance turbo model.

With a turbocharged 2.0-liter TFSI engine sending 197 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque through to the front wheels via Volkswagen’s XDS electronic differential and either a six-speed manual or six-speed DSG, the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo could best be described as a Golf GTI in cuter wrapping.

However, the suspension and steering has been tuned more for comfort in the Beetle rather than outright performance and this shows in the driving performance.

Nevertheless, you can still drop the hammer with the steering wheel locked and the car will continue on its directed path with only a small squeak from its tires.

The XDS system, which can adjust the level of torque being sent to either of the wheels, does its job well. Additionally, the Beetle Turbo also benefits from the Jetta GLI’s advanced multi-link independent rear suspension, with coil springs, telescopic dampers and another anti-roll bar, while the regular models make do with a basic torsion beam rear setup.

The Beetle Turbo’s brakes are better too, with 12.3-inch vented discs and red calipers on the front axle and 10-7-inch discs at the rear.

The 0-60 mph dash will take you less than 7.5 seconds and top speed is limited to 130 mph.

When it comes to transmissions, the DSG is the pick of the bunch. It is unmatched when it comes to shift times and can become very addictive when you start running up and down the gears. Note, it can bog down a little when you’re moving off the line but it’s unlikely that you’ll be doing right foot to the floor starts all the time.

Another gripe is the electric steering system, which helps to save fuel but can feel a bit too artificial
when the cornering gets fast.

latest Subaru BRZ 2011

Subaru's version of the shared rear-drive sports car platform that will also be marketed as a Toyota (FT-86 II) and a Scion (FRS) will be making its official debut in not-quite-production trim at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. We already know a little about the car, but today, we get a few more details.

Most recently shown at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show as the BRZ Prologue II, the rear-drive Subie sports car will be powered by a 2.0-liter direct-injection boxer four-cylinder, which will be unique to the BRZ and its siblings. Output is expected to be around 200 horsepower, which is rather good for a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter. It will also have a very low center of gravity, about 450 mm, or 17.7 inches. But we already knew all of that. We even knew why Subaru decided to go RWD with the BRZ.

The new details, courtesy of Car and Driver, include a hint that it will have not just standard direct injection, but Toyota's port-and-direct injection system; the transmissions will be six-speed in both manual and automatic form; the BRZ will look more or less just like the Toyota/Scion version, aside from a different set of bumpers--almost all sheetmetal will be shared; the ony differentiation between the Scion and Toyota version swill be badging; and the Scion version of the BRZ will be available in very low-content trim for tuners to play with.

UPDATE: The latest image shows how the standard Toyota FT-86 sports car will look, minus the Modellista bodykit and accessories seen in the previous leaked images.

You'll note that the headlights are now devoid of the LED detailing seen in the previous shots, and the strangely shaped roof fin is also gone.

The image, which was uploaded to the FT86club forum, also gives us a better indication as to how the upcoming Scion FR-S, the version of the car to be sold in the U.S., will look.

ORIGINAL: Though it isn’t scheduled to be officially revealed until the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show in a month's time, alleged images of the production version of the Toyota FT-86 rear-wheel drive sports car have now surfaced online.

The leaked images reveal a design very similar to the one previewed on the myriad of FT-86 concept cars shown over the years, though there are some clear differences.

While the front of the car appears to have kept its gaping mouth look, the production version’s headlights aren’t as aggressive, while the side profile looks a lot smoother.

At the rear is where the biggest changes are apparent, with a new tail-lamp design, as well as a slightly milder diffuser and more conservative bootlid. Overall, however, the car still appears very aggressive and performance oriented.

As for the interior, we can clearly see a short throw shifter for the standard six-speed manual transmission, as well as a large, centrally mounted tacho, and racy bucket seats. There also appears to metal foot pedals though it’s unclear yet as to whether these will be standard features or options.

Importantly, the name of Toyota’s new sports car isn’t revealed although we do know that the automaker’s accessories division Modellista will be developing some new parts for the Japanese domestic market.

No powertrain specs have been revealed, though we do know the car will be coming with a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with a horizontally opposed ‘boxer’ design and displacement of 2.0-liters. Direct injection technology should see around 200 horsepower liberated. The car is also expected to have the lowest center of gravity of any volume produced model--about 450 mm in fact.

Honda Civic Sedan 2012

The 2012 Honda Civic Si introduces very few exterior styling changes, but makes some big updates to the powertrain. That's just about the opposite of what we expected, and it turns out that it may be the opposite of what the typical enthusiast wants, too. Our overall rating of 7 reflects those changes, but also shows there's still a lot to like about the new Si.

How, you ask? For 2012, the Civic Si ditches its scrappy, high-revving 2.0-liter four-cylinder and attempts to turn the dial to 11 with a new 201-horsepower 2.4-liter four-pot. The problem is that it's not as ready to rev, it doesn't rev as high, and there's not as much of an increase in usable torque as you might expect. Worse, it's less fuel-efficent than the 2.0 that came before it (the 2.4 rates 22/31 mpg city/highway for 25 mpg combined), it's noisier, and it doesn't respond as crisply.

On the plus side, the chassis is still good, though it doesn't feel as sharp as the previous Si. Still, for a front-drive two- or four-door, it's among the better options on the market. Ride comfort, as with all Si models, is lower than a typical car, but buyers interested in the sporty model will likely find it worth living with.

There's quite a bit of noise and rumble in the new car, more than in previous models. Both the sport-tuned chassis and the new engine contribute to this effect. Overall materials and comfort are good, however, though the Si falls victim to some of the same faults as the standard Civic: hard, thin-feeling plastic on the top of the dash, a somewhat bizarre curvature, and lots of flat gray plastic on non-navigation-equipped models. Other shortcomings compared to the competition include missing bottle holders in the doors, no rear-seat power outlet, and no handy rubber-bottomed tray to keep phones and other gadgets from sliding around.

Given its bargain pricing, however, it's hard to argue with the overall package of the Civic Si. Standard features in navigation-equipped models include: a 360-watt seven-speaker audio system, MP3/USB/Bluetooth handsfree/auxiliary input, power accessories, a full host of airbags, ABS, stability control (VSA), and more.

Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 2012

Dodge Challenger SRT8 2012

Dodge Challenger SRT8 2012

It's a sunny Southern California afternoon, and you're blasting around Willow Springs Raceway, located a little less than 100 miles north of L.A. Pedal down as you approach the first turn, you count numbers on the dash, watching the speedometer climb steadily towards 130. You cross the start/finish line as the checkered flag waves, and you know your next lap will be taken at interstate speeds as you cool the car down following three flying laps. You reach the braking marker and slam on the binders, releasing the breath you didn't even know you were holding.
That, in a nutshell, describes the feeling of driving the 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 on the track. We drove the 2011 Challenger SRT8 392 on the track last fall, and not much has changed--but what has changed makes the Challenger that much better at hot lapping.
For 2012, the car receives a two-mode adaptive suspension that offers an "Auto" mode that adjusts to road conditions and driver inputs and a "Sport" mode that locks in a higher damping rate for back-road blasting.
The rest of the changes: A new heated steering wheel with shift paddles for automatic-transmission cars, and an 18-speaker Harmon Kardon 900-watt audio system with GreenEdge technology (basically, the amplifiers and speakers are tuned to use the least amount of energy possible).
There's one big picture change: SRT is now its own brand, with former Dodge CEO Ralph Gilles in charge.
Otherwise, the car remains mostly unchanged from its 2011 update. Specs for the updated 2012 version are as follows: Manufacturer estimated 0-60 time in the high four-second range, manufacturer estimated quarter-mile time of mid-12 seconds (high 12s with the six-speed manual) and top speeds of 182 mph with the manual and 176 with the five-speed automatic. If you're wondering, fuel-economy numbers are 14/22 mpg with the automatic and 14/23 mpg with the stick.
We didn't get any wheel time on the street, but we did get three hot laps a piece in both the manual and automatic transmission cars, and there is a noticeable difference from our last track drive. The last time, we said the car felt more planted and more predictable than the 2010 model. Those thoughts haven't changed. But with the sport mode turned on, the car felt even lighter and nimbler, with the driver able to gain confidence with each lap. It still offers more muscle-car feel than sports-car verve, but it definitely has better dance moves than before, and the available power makes up for any sins the driver may commit upon corner entry. And the brakes are spectacular.
Yes, the changes are subtle. But they make a damn good car even better, which when one thinks about it, is really the intent of the SRT brand.

Dodge Challenger R/T is Green 2011

Dodge Challenger
Dodge has never been shy about using eye-popping colors for many of its performance models like Plum Crazy Purple, Go Mango! and Top Banana Yellow. The tradition continues with the 2011 Challenger, as Dodge will offer this new Green with Envy paint scheme for both the R/T and SRT8 392 models.

The limited edition paint scheme will also come with a few extras, like the dual side stripes and five-spoke cast aluminum wheels on the R/T as well as the Dark Slate Nappa leather seats with Green with Envy stitching on both models. Dodge had an R/T model sitting on the show floor in Chicago, which you can see in the high-res gallery below. You can also hit the jump to read Chrysler's PR for more details about the car.

The expanding muscle car market is going to be "Green With Envy" as the Dodge brand today announced a first-time, limited production run of the 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic and SRT8® 392 models featuring Green With Envy exterior color.

Both Dodge Challenger models are improved for 2011 and deliver more of what American muscle-car enthusiasts want - unmistakable design, powerful HEMI® V-8 engines with new technologies and world-class handling and braking. Executed with quality and precision, the two new Challenger Green With Envy models provide an extra dose of exclusivity.

"We're using Green With Envy on the new 2011 Dodge Challengers to pay tribute to some of the coolest paint colors from our past, including the "Sublime" and "Green Go" Dodge Challengers from the 1970's and more recently, the "Snakeskin Green" Vipers from 2008-2010," said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Brand and Senior Vice President , Product Design - Chrysler Group LLC. "Not only will this exclusive heritage color remain unique to the Dodge brand, it adds another fresh and exciting element to our modern American muscle coupe."

Production of the 2011 Green With Envy Challenger models will start in February 2011 at the Brampton Assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Challenger SRT8 Green With Envy models are available for ordering now at Dodge dealerships, while orders for the Challenger R/T Classic models will begin in late first quarter, 2011.

2011 DODGE CHALLENGER R/T CLASSIC
Upgraded for the performance enthusiast, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic includes a new performance-tuned suspension with rail-like handling, more power from the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 and more standard equipment.

The limited edition Green With Envy model features two A-line body-side stripes – either in matte black (standard) or white (optional). New five-spoke, cast-aluminum wheels are styled in the spirit of nostalgic Halibrand or "Kidney Bean" style with a modern interpretation. On the interior, the premium Dark Slate Nappa leather seats and center console feature Green With Envy accent stitching.

The legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine adds a new cold-air induction system for 375 track-tearing horsepower (with standard Tremec six-speed manual transmission) and 372 horsepower (with optional five-speed Auto Stick transmission). Fuel Saver technology on the automatic transmission seamlessly transitions to high-fuel-economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. This optimizes fuel economy when full V-8 power is not required, without sacrificing vehicle performance or capability.

The EPA fuel economy, miles per gallon rating is 16/25 (city/hwy) for both the automatic transmission and manual transmission models.

Other standard equipment on the new 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic package includes "Challenger" fender badges in classic script, classic "egg-crate grille" with heritage "R/T" badge, functional hood scoops, high-intensity discharge headlamps (HID), heated front seats and six Boston Acoustics premium speakers with 276-watt amplifier. The standard Super Track Pak Group adds a high-performance steering gear, high-performance brake linings, high-performance tuned monotube-shock absorbers, P245/45R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 Super Car three-season tires and three-mode ESC with "full off."

The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic Green With Envy, is $ 35,785 (includes $825 destination).

2011 DODGE CHALLENGER SRT8
This new and exclusive Green With Envy paint scheme joins the return of the legendary 392-cubic inch HEMI powertrain under the hood in the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392.

In addition to the unique exterior, dual, full-body black stripes and 20-inch, five-spoke SRT-exclusive wheels with polished face and satin black painted pockets are standard. The race-inspired interior of the Challenger SRT8 392 features standard SRT-branded seats in Dark Slate Nappa Leather with Green With Envy accent bands in front and rear.

Pumping out 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, the newest HEMI engine in the SRT product lineup provides an additional 90 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,900 rpm compared with the previous 6.1-liter V-8 engine.

The added torque allows for inspired standing starts and improved straight-line performance while new, performance-tuned motor mounts improve idle stability and ride control at any speed. An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing provides maximum low-end torque while optimizing high-end power.

New for 2011 is the Fuel Saver technology (four-cylinder mode) in automatic transmission equipped models, which allows the engine to operate economically on four cylinders or use all eight cylinders when needed.
